Q: Why is our Westerner friend unable to speak 'Singlish' properly?
A: It is because he doesn't know the grammar of Singlish!
Singaporeans know where to put the 'lah, lor, what' and others in a sentence because of the grammatical rules of Singlish. Singlish is a key ingredient in the unique melting pot that is Singapore. Singlish is mostly borrowed from Hokkien, Cantonese and Malay to indicate the attitude to what is being said. Most Singaporeans regards Singlish as a marker of national identity.
