What does a tadpole eat?

Tadpoles start out eating their own yolk sacks. Once that's exhausted they are completely vegetarian, eating algae, plants and other microscopic things in the water. Some say it's sufficient to just keep adding fresh pond water to get more microbes in; fresh live pond plants may be suitable too (especially if they come with their own coating of algae).
When their back legs emerge, within a short period of time they turn into complete carnivores. They will indeed eat each other if not enough microbes/insects/other small animals are in the water. Also, they are sometimes kept as pets. In this enviroment, they will eat many things. They will eat lettuce, bread and even scrambled eggs !
